How to Play the Gotcha Game (Circle Game)
The game begins when the offensive player makes a circle with their forefinger and thumb below their waist, similar to an “Okay” gesture. The purpose is to fool someone into gazing at his hand. If the victim glances at his hand, he has lost the game, and the offensive player hits the victim on the bicep with a closed fist.
Gotcha Game Rules:
1. The hand of the offensive player must be below his waist.
2. The victim should try not to glance down to view the circle. In other words, the victim notices a circle-hand incident through peripheral vision. The victim has two options for winning the game:
a. The victim does not lower their gaze to the signal. Instead, the victim locks her gaze on the offensive player and declares, “I’m not going to look at it.” (Or something similar.)
b. The victim does not lower their gaze to the signal. Instead, the victim rapidly pokes his index finger through the circle-hand display of the offensive player. If he can break the circle by poking inside, he wins and gets to strike the offensive player in the bicep. This move necessitates exceptional motor skills (to poke the circle without actually looking directly at it).
3. If the victim glances at the circle, he is defeated, and the offensive player yells, “Gotcha!” (and is hit.)
4. If the victim fails his effort to poke the circle, he loses, and the offensive player yells, “Gotcha!” (and is hit.)
5. If the victim pokes the circle and the offensive player closes the circle, trapping the victim’s finger, the offensive player yells, “Gotcha!” (and is hit.)
It is common to “wipe off the hit” after it has been given. (Apply a quick open hand brush to the bicep.)
The sort of distraction authorized by the offensive player to bring attention to the signal is unrestricted. An excellent strategy is to ask, “Hey, is this yours?” "You could try one of these,” for example.
There is no limit to the number of times you may attempt this each day. Some people are “easy to get,” whereas others with strong awareness and peripheral vision are “tougher to get” with the Gotcha Prank.
